Waiting for Spring – and a Square as part of the Cozy Fall Charity MAL 2022

Waiting for Spring.

As much as I love the colours of autumn, I dread the rain. I love the sweater weather, but I hate the shortening of days. I love the scent of cinnamon in hot chocolate, but I dislike having to warm up after being outside. So, when I was asked to design a square for the MAL, I knew it needed to be something to look forward to. Something floral! A sign of new life in spring. A promise. Hope..

Hope is the ungraspable thing that keeps us going even though we are struggling. We cannot see it, not hear it, but it gives us the strength. Hope.

Both hosts Noorain (from Noor’s Knits) and Hortense (from Knitting with Chopsticks) have had loved ones affected by childhood cancer and they organized this event as a means to give back: A portion of proceeds from this event will be donated to Cure Childhood Cancer. There are a bunch of exciting giveaways from sponsors too! I believe this an excellent example of hope. We support the scientists looking for cures, so there is hope for more people! Please consider adding to that hope and buy the patterns to all the Tunisian crochet squares, crochet squares or knit squares. Or, why choose, and just get all of them?!

Here’s my pattern!

Materials
Any worsted weight (#4) yarn.
I have used Stylecraft Special DK, held double, 100% Acrylic, 100 g = approx 322 yards (294 meters), with samples in Spring Green (# 1316) and Sherbet(# 1034)
Yardage: 100y/92m
8mm (US L-11) Tunisian hook.
Darning needle
Scissors
Sizes and construction:
One size square: 8”x 8”(20cm x 20cm)

Notes
Pattern is written in US terms and Imperial measurements. I held a DK yarn double, whereas the pattern asks for worsted weight yarn. If you need more stitches to get an 8” square, add more stitches around the flowers.
The first loop on the hook and the edge stitch each count as stitches. Upon completing a FwdP, you should have 25 loops on your hook.

Abbreviations (US)
Ch – chain
Sk – skip
St(s) – stitch(es)
Slst – slip stitch
FwdP – Forward Pass
RetP – Return Pass
Tss – Tunisian simple stitch
YO – yarn over
BO – Tunisian bind off

Gauge
I used 25 st x 21 rows for a 8” x 8” square. Gauge square is completed in Tunisian Simple Stitch, and blocked.
